2 Out of 10 Cars Fail Emission Test at Start of New Program

In the first days of the new vehicle emission verification program, 2 out of every 10 cars checked did not pass the test, reported Abraham Torres Andrade, director of Air Quality at the Ministry of the Environment. He said that the figure is lower than expected, since they calculated that at the start, 30% would not pass.

He added that, on average, 90% of motorists who made an appointment have attended on time.

In 12 reviews carried out as of noon on Tuesday at the test center located at 1230 Magisterio Street, all vehicles passed, and received the hologram sticker.

Some motorists interviewed said that it was difficult for them to make the electronic payment.

“It is assumed that you can pay with a debit card. It was difficult for me to download the payment form to go to the tax collector. I almost had to cancel the appointment,” one motorist said.

According to the guidelines of the program, in case of not passing the test on the first attempt, people can try again free of charge at the same test center within 30 calendar days.

According to data from the Ministry of the Environment, there are around 370,000 vehicles with license plate 7, which must be verified in August and September. They say that only 80% of these vehicles are active, and, of those, 6 out of 10 are cars in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area.
