Ajijic seniors, people with disabilities, and people with limited resources now have free community dining room service three days a week. It was inaugurated by Ajijic’s Integral Development Center de la Familia (DIF) on Tuesday, July 27.
The person in charge of directing the soup kitchens in Ajijic and San Antonio Tlayacapan, Alicia García, said that, at the moment, there is no socioeconomic study as to who is eligible for the services. People only have to take a food container to the DIF Ajijic facilities at Calle Camino Real #100 at noon on any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Health measures have been established to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Garcia emphasized that what they need most is the support of Ajijic residents. They need volunteers and donors of supplies for cooking, or of food already made, since, unlike the San Antonio Tlayacapan dining room, where they make the meals from scratch, Ajijic does not yet have such facilities.
Garcia added that students provide service, saying, “There are young people who go to Guadalajara to perform service or internships without knowing that they can do that here, near their homes. Last semester, students from Tecnológico de Chapala supported us in the dining rooms, and we supported them by providing their service hours,”
The dining room service is also for people who are in a difficult economic streak due to the pandemic or other situations. “Whole families have arrived in such difficult straights that they come crying, and they are given the support of the dining room,” she said.
