The full Senate generally approved the presidential reform that transfers operational and administrative control of the National Guard to the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena). The votes were cast along party lines, with senators from political parties different from the president’s (Morena) voted against the measure.
In a double session, with a waiver of paperwork and the rejection of three suspension motions, the measure was approved. The opposition announced that it is preparing an action of unconstitutionality before the court against the order that was turned over to the federal executive.
“The president’s peers will not be Juárez or Cárdenas, but Echeverría and Díaz Ordaz,” MC coordinator Clemente Castañeda said on the platform, stating that the executive intends to hide the failure of his security strategy.
