Here’s the Best Mosquito Repellent – And it’s Easy to Buy!

The bad news this week is that scientists are finding that Dengue Fever virus antibodies seem to make Zika virus infections worse. The viruses are both carried by the common mosquito, of course. Here’s a recent scientific abstract explaining what has been found. Fortunately, Jalisco has only confirmed 2 cases of the Zika virus in…

Mexico’s Self-Image Affects Its World Image

Mexico’s Self-Image Affects Its World Image

During my many years as a correspondent in Mexico, some of my best reporting happened around dinner tables. So on a recent trip back, I dined with a range of old contacts to catch up on how Mexico was handling its most pressing challenges, like the 2014 student massacre in southern Mexico, which shocked the…

Mesón Don Quijote Restaurant – Ajijic

Mesón Don Quijote Restaurant – Ajijic

A new restaurant in Ajijic with a Spanish chef sounded intriguing to me. Mexican restaurants certainly have their charms, but the ability to prepare Spanish dishes has never been one of them. In fact, the Mexican interpretation of paella is normally dreadful. It was therefore really exciting to hear of a new restaurant in Ajijic with a…

Soup Kitchens for Street Animals

Soup Kitchens for Street Animals

ComeDog (Food for Dogs) is a program that provides food and water for street dogs and cats through public dispensers in Mexico. The program arrived in Mexico last year, and now has a presence in several states.

The 1.2-meter-high galvanized metal containers hold up to 22 kilograms of food and four liters of water. Animals that use the dispensers would become possible candidates for sterilization and adoption.

The ComeDog organization can be reached through its Facebook page and its website.

Which Lakeside animal charity will be the first to sponsor this program—maybe in conjunction with local government? The Lake Chapala Reporter will gladly assist with publicity and fundraisers.

Lakeside Friends of the Animals A.C. – Financials

The president of this non-profit organization, Susan Hillis, has declined to provide the Lake Chapala Reporter with financial records at this time. She said that the organization’s accountant of seven years has recently been found to have embezzled a significant amount of money, going back even to the previous administration. A new accountant has been…

Ignorance Can Be Dangerous To Your Health

Ignorance Can Be Dangerous To Your Health

Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to choosing doctors in Mexico. In fact, ignorance can be dangerous to your health. “Common knowledge” among the expat community is that private doctors are the best doctors in Mexico. But, in fact, public hospital doctors are generally the best trained and most likely to be up-to-date on the latest…
